Pokemon was created by Japanese game designer, Satoshi Tajiri. The word itself is a combination term formed from their original name, pocket monsters. Pocket monsters were originally released in the form of a game, in conjunction with Nintendo. Game Freak and Creatures inc. were the partners of Nintendo in this venture and Satoshi was involved in both.

The game eventually became a hit in Japan, after which it was determined that an anime was to be made from it. the anime was also a big success, with the show making it to western television programming. In the west, it also enjoyed a huge success. The trading card game was subsequently released and the games were translated into english.

The pokemon phenomenon had occurred, having a worldwide effect. Pokemon even made it to the front page of the Time magazine in 1999. The American comany 4Kids Ent. partnered with Nintendo and Satoshi to conduct the english animation, to the extent where the movies and all episodes of the series aired on American television were dubbed and censored by 4Kids Ent.
